Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam:
Zakat is an important and essential obligation in Islam. It is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, and its obligation is established through the Quran and Hadith. In the Quran, Allah has commanded Muslims to give Zakat alongside prayers in various places.
Obligation of Zakat:
As Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:
And be steadfast in Salah (prayer) and pay Zakat, and bow down with those who bow down. [Surah Al Baqarah: 43]
And also says:
And be steadfast in Salah (prayer) and give Zakat. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. Certainly, Allah is watchful of what you do. [Surah Al Baqarah: 110]
And it is narrated from Muadh bin Jabal in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim:
When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sent Hazrat Mu’adh as the governor of Yemen, he instructed him, saying: “O Mu’adh! When the people of Yemen profess the oneness of God and the prophethood (of Muhammad) and begin to pray, then inform them that Allah has made zakat (charity) obligatory on their wealth, which will be taken from the wealthy among them and distributed to the poor.” (Sahih Bukhari: 1395, Sahih Muslim: 19)
The above-mentioned two verses of the Quran and the Hadith clearly illustrate the obligation of Zakat and its importance.
What Is the Nisab?
The amount and limit of wealth required for Zakat to be obligatory is called “Nisab.” If someone does not possess wealth equivalent to the Nisab, then Zakat will not be obligatory for him.

Zakat Nisab in cash and money:
To determine the nisab (minimum amount) for zakat on cash and money, the majority of scholars have considered the nisab of Silver as the standard.
A person who possesses cash or money equivalent to the value of 52.5 tolas of silver must ensure that this cash exceeds all daily necessities, and the person should not be in debt. In such a situation, the person is termed as a صاحبِ نصاب (one who meets the nisab).
The zakat rate for cash and money will also be 2.5 percent, similar to that of silver zakat.
