Zakat Is a Pillar of Islam
Zakat is one of the five important pillars of Islam. It is obligatory for wealthy Muslims. Zakat is also required on gold and silver. Allah, the Almighty, has stated:
Obligation of Zakat
As for those who accumulate gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them the good‘ news of a painful punishment. [Surah At Taubah: 34]
And it is narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.’ “Then the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) recited the holy verses:– ‘Let not those who withhold . . .’ (to the end of the verse). (3.180).
The verse of the Quran and Hadith clearly indicate that those who are wealthy and possess gold and silver, yet do not spend their wealth in the way of Allah, will face severe punishment on the Day of Judgment.
What Is the Nisab?
The amount and limit of wealth required for Zakat to be obligatory is called “Nisab.” If someone does not possess wealth equivalent to the Nisab, then Zakat will not be obligatory for him.

An important issue
If someone only has gold and not silver or any other wealth, then his zakat will be calculated based on the gold nisab.
If someone has both silver and gold, and neither reaches their respective nisab levels, then in this case, zakat will be calculated based on the nisab of silver.
Note: Gold and silver include gold and silver jewelry as well; the nisab for gold and silver is the same as that for their jewelry.
